There are only two metals in heraldic colouring, gold and siver, which equate to a yellow and white. See colours and furs for other colours and patterns on a shield.

Because of the general rule is that colour should not appear immediately on another colour, nor a metal on another metal, coloured charges tend to appear on metal grounds and vice versa.
